Go Global!

Because we work with so many writers from all over the world, we like to work with global charities which provide practical assistance to countries and people less fortunate than ourselves. Here are a few of our favorites:

Heifer is starting a Read to Feed program in elementary schools to get children to read more and collect sponsorship money for doing so. All proceeds will be donated to providing relief in the form of animals, trees, beehives or other products which families can use to sustain themselves and their families in the long-term. If you would like your school or children's school or library to get involved, please visit:

http://www.heifer.org/giving_prog/read_feed.htm#what

Even if you do not join the Read to Feed program, there are other direct things you can do directly as well:

Donate a tree, or tree seeds to a village: http://catalog.heifer.org/trees.cfm

There also full and part gifts of such items as pigs, water buffaloes, and of course heifers! even if you can't afford to give a whole one yourself.

You can sponsor a child and write to them and their families. http://www.childreach.com/ The reasonable monthly stipend goes toward food, medicine, and education, and you will receive a writing pack and information and photos on your child with details on how to get to know them better and participate in their daily lives, not just given them a hand out. Please visit the website for a list of children and countries who could benefit from your involvement.

Closer to home, why not adopt a pet and give it a good and loving home. More and more senior animals are being thrown out on the streets as they get elderly and begin to have health problems. Yes, they do take time and money, but you get so much love and companionship in return. Please visit http://www.petfinder.org/QsearchGet.html to see if there is a lost little cat or dog which you can welcome into your family.
