Timetable for MS which are accepted

What we are looking for:

We are looking for high-quality fiction in a variety of genres, from serious, hard-working and committed writers. We are looking for a good story with strong characterization through action, and above all, meaningful and realistic dialogue. They must be strong representations of their genre, or evenly balanced if they are cross-genre.

Manuscripts and submissions must be fully complete.

We do not accept e mail submissions any longer.

We accept only books which would be suited to future paper publication. We do not do only ebooks.

Books must be a minimum of 40,000 words. If your title is longer than 120,000 words, you might like to consider dividing it into separate volumes. Sequels do sell!

We do not publish erotic or graphic sex novels. Love/sex scenes are fine, so long as they are appropriate to the work as a whole. We will give fair warning to readers if we think the book is too spicy. Basic rule--if you would be embarrassed to show it to your own family, then it is probably too spicy. Books which are too violent are not what our readers have come to expect either. We also tend to avoid books written with a first person narrator='I'.

We do not tend to do anthologies, and only a limited number of children's books and non-fiction, as our marketing expertise lies mainly in the fiction area. Due to the nature of digital printing, heavily illustrated books, or books with color inside, are not viable at this time.

Please note: we understand the reasons for so many of you asking, but we cannot consider any books which have been previously published by another electronic company until the rights have reverted back fully to the author. Since we are trying to publish new and noteworthy voices, those who have been self-published with Iuniverse, Xlibris, and similar vanity presses also cannot be considered at this time. If you have another book not already in print, by all means you may submit that to us for consideration. We do fully sympathise with the appalling final products many of you have ended up with, and the terrible treatment you have experienced at the hands of vanity presses, but if your book is out there at the minute, you would do well to try to succeed with it, with a view to building up a track record of sales. And no matter who publishes you, promoting yourself is always going to be a key part of your new career as an author.

One final "rule" at Domhan is we are actively seeking writers from all over the world, not just the USA and the UK. We represent over 20 different countries at this time in the Domhan family of writers and artists. We also love multi-national settings and locales. Domhan is the Irish word for 'universe.'

Our Formats:

All titles accepted for publication will be typeset for paperback, and formatted electronically for Glassbook, Softbook, Rocket, (now the two new Gemstar models), Everybook, the new Microsoft E-reader, Palm, Windows CE, and ION (which does not require and special software and is stand-alone) and any other electronic-medium readers which will be appearing on the market in the near future.

Please note that our acceptance rate is approximately 1-2% of all ms submitted to us.

If you think your work fits into Domhan's mission, please contact us via regular mail with the following information:

Submissions checklist

(you might like to print this out, and can enclose a copy with your submission for the sake of convenience)

a-Title of book

b-word count

c-A general summary of your book on paper and on disk

d-A chapter by chapter synopsis of your book on paper and on disk (please make this a separate file on the disk)

e-The whole of your novel/work of non-fiction on 3.5" floppy disk(s) in RTF format.

You may send the whole ms on paper if you wish, but please bear in mind that if you wish it returned, you must provide an SAE with sufficient postage. Postage costs are an ever-growing expense we would appreciate not having thrust upon us.

Acceptable formats are RTF or ASCII only. Look at your 'SAVE AS' feature in your wordprocessing program if you are not sure. (These formats might also be labelled Rich Text Format or Text only--a lot of good writers out there are not techies, we know, but that is ok-the story is the thing.) So long as it is in RTF, we do not care about font size, font type, margins, headers, footers, or anything else. These are all formatting issues which would all be changed anyway once the book was edited and went into production and layout. Any 'publishing house' which tells you that you have to have it in 12 point Times font with headers and footers and so on, is never going to edit your book, just throw it up and call it 'published'.

Our only begging and urgent request is that there not be returns at the end of each line. People who use Corel Word Perfect should be especially careful of this.

Please make sure your book is in one single file only, not broken up into individual chapters. Also make sure these are NON-RETURNABLE: do not send your only copy and entrust it to the US or other postal service!

f-Genre of the book. Please also put this information on the outside of the envelope, so that we may direct your submission quickly to the appropriate editor.

g-Your pen name, if any,

h-Legal name,

i-your full mailing address

j-email address(es),

k-your dedication, acknowledgements, etc.

l-what biographical details you would like included with your book. This can include previous publishing credits, if any.

m-Please state whether it is a simultaneous submission, and if so, what other publishers you have sent your work to. Please note: we do not 'bid' on books against other houses, so do not tell us to 'hurry up because another house wants it'. If that is the case, they are welcome to it.

Please also note: we reserve the right to forgo the pleasure of reviewing the work of any author who is abusive and rude, or who is not prepared to wait 4-6 weeks for their ms to be reviewed thoroughly and carefully. Even at 4-6 weeks, our response time is still far more rapid than most traditional or even non-traditional publishing houses, and trying to badger Domhan's editors into putting your ms at the head of the line is only doing a disservice to your fellow authors and to your own work.

Failure to comply with the above procedures will result in unnecessary delays in dealing with your work.

Rejections: We will endeavor to reply promptly regarding your manuscript within 4-6 weeks from the manuscript arriving and being logged into the system and assigned to the first editor.

Acceptances: If your book is accepted, you will receive contracts for paper and electronic rights, and an author questionnaire to help us develop your career as a writer and to market the book appropriately and effectively. Review copies will be sent out to appropriate parties. We will aim for simultaneous release of both the electronic and the paper editions. This can entail a period waiting until an opening appears in our next seasonal list, but we will endeavor to have the book edited and selling within six-eight months.

Previously Published authors:

We can consider books which have gone out of print if there is a compelling reason to put them back into print. Please follow the submission guidelines as set out above, and note previous publication details.

Please note: our most Frequently Asked Question is :

How much do you charge to publish my book?

WE DO NOT CHARGE ANY MONEY. DOMHAN BOOKS NEVER HAS, AND NEVER WILL.

We wish we did not have to waste time answering this question so often. We never have, we never will charge any money. We despair at people telling us they paid 'only' [!!] $600 to get their book 'published' with _____ company, who does not 'take just anyone the way ____ other company does'. Rest assured, when _____ company meets so many of the sadly naive people we meet, and sees how easy it is to get $600 from each of them, they will publish anyone and everyone!

Since first writing this several months ago, another writer came to us and said the 'publishing house' had asked for only $16,000 to publish their book!! Do you have any idea how many books you would have to sell to recoup that cost, with the current discount rate in the industry standing at 55%?

NEVER PAY. NO MATTER WHAT. NO MATTER HOW DESPERATE YOU ARE TO GET YOUR BOOK ON PAPER. NEVER.

If you want to self-publish, (produce the book yourself) find out all about how to go about it from www.parapublishing.com (even authors seeking publication with full-service publishing houses like ours would do well to look at the website, packed full of useful information about how the book world REALLY works).

We do not charge a penny for reading, editing, printing, publishing, publicizing, or doing the artwork for a book which is submitted to us, and then accepted for publication, so DO NOT ask us how much we charge, or have any dealings with any "publishing house" which DOES charge for any of these services. Charging these fees and not giving fair royalties to authors for their work is not ethical. Likewise, do not have any dealings with any groups on the Internet for which one must become a "member" and pay a fee! You can do a lot more with your money to promote yourself than these places ever could! Do not pay money for space ads in magazines just to get a 'review': we advertise our books in reputable journals such as Publishers Weekly and Library Journal, periodicals that every bookseller and librarian uses in making their purchasing decisions.

Anyone can much produce a book on their own nowadays--just go to Iuniverse or Mighty Words and see all of the authors out there doing it themselves. But getting the book into the hands of the reader is what it is all about, and that means one thing: QUALITY. And QUALITY means reputable reviews, and a group of professionals willing to work hard to push your book into the marketplace.

Our impressive array of hardcover and paperback books are professionally edited and produced in-house, and printed using the latest digital print technologies, and distributed worldwide to booksellers, libraries, and other interested parties by Ingram Book Group, the largest distributor and wholesaler in the world.

A sincere thank you:

It occurs to us that as we plow through our mountains of work every day, we do not always take the time to say thank you for all the wonderful things people do for us. They buy our books, they read them, they enjoy them, they write reviews of them and tell other people about them. Librarians stock them on their shelves, and booksellers in the displays. Our loyal authors work away at booksignings, and at new and even more thrilling novels, which they entrust to our care. Our team of readers, artists, editors and helpers all work long hours contributing their hard work and expertise to making Domhan that little bit better with each passing day. And all of the people we work with in the technology fields have worked tirelessly and passed on their expertise, helping us move ever closer to our realization of Domhan Books as it is, and as it can and will be. None of us ever dreamed how successful we would become in so short a space of time, and as our hardcovers with dustjackets roll off the presses, we feel a thrill of satisfaction, but also the strong sense that though we have fulfilled so many of our goals and aspirations, there are still plenty more to be attained.

December is traditionally the time to say thank you to all the people we care about, but it has always been our belief that we should be kind to each other all year round, not just during the holidays. So a sincere thank you to everyone who has contributed to our success so far, and is travelling down the road with us to ever yet more wonderful adventures.

Further thank yous

We at Domhan Books are always interested in the cross-fertilization of technology when it means new and even more exciting opportunities for our authors. We are proud to announce that our new on-line Customer Service Department is up and running, thanks to our newest strategic partner, Touchscape, and we are currently finishing up the beta testing on our Pub Easy Site with a view to going live shortly, so that booksellers all over the world, large and small, can buy any of our titles.

We are adding to our list of distributors as well, to ensure even faster delivery of our books to libraries and stores.

Many thanks to our tireless head of business development, and to all of the people who have begun the journey of a thousand miles with a few small steps side by side with us.

April 2001

Many congratulations to all who took part in the many bookfairs and signings this month. We have well and truly launched our spring list with a flourish.

The Pub Easy site is nearly complete, though sadly, Chris who was helping us pull it all together has been re-assigned to other thrilling tasks. A huge thank you to him for all his months of unceasing support.

Thanks also to our partners at Cyberread, Marilyn Jenkins and company, for the beautiful job they have done on our section of the site. And to Booksamillion and Ebookad for helping us to build out our section of their store also.

A huge thank you to all of the authors who have been with us since the very beginning in 1998, and a warm welcome to all the first-time authors joining us this month. We look forward to a long and happy relationship with you as you continue to develop your talents.
